A December 2021 survey in the United States explored public opinion on whether it was acceptable for a professional athlete to not compete in sporting events due to mental health issues. While 62 percent of respondents stated it was reasonable for sportspeople to drop out of events for mental health reasons, eight percent disagreed and thought it would not be acceptable to do so.
