In a survey conducted between August and October 2023, the majority of financial institutions in Japan, around 69 percent, stated that ESG finance is a future growth area. Around 60 percent expected that demand for ESG funding will expand, while nine percent thought that the need for ESG financing will plateau in the mid-to-long term.
Opinion on the future demand for ESG finance among financial institutions in Japan as of October 2023
The survey sample comprised 447 financial institutions, including 10 city banks, trust banks, and other banks, 56 regional banks, 32 second-tier regional banks, 226 Shinkin banks, and 123 credit cooperatives.
Respondents were asked about the outlook for ESG-related financing demand among their institution's customers and business areas in general.
