In a survey conducted from September to October 2022, the majority of financial institutions in Japan, around 90 percent, stated that ESG finance is a future growth area. Around 49 percent stated that demand for ESG finance will expand, while 41 percent thought that the need for capital for businesses and projects that benefit environment and society will remain small in the short term.

The survey sample comprised 355 financial institutions, including 9 city banks, trust banks, and other banks, 49 regional banks, 30 second-tier regional banks, 178 Shinkin banks, and 89 credit cooperatives.
