From 2015 through to 2022, the total payments from the European Social Fund (ESF) made by the European Union (EU) to its member states steadily increased. The majority of the total funds came from interim payments which grew from roughly 170 million euros in 2015 to approximately 59.7 billion euros in 2022, bringing the total payments to 68.5 billion euros by 2022. The EU previously decided the level of funds to allocate to the ESF, this allocation amount provided a future guideline when deciding how much money to send from the ESF to the member states.
