The European Union planned to allocate the majority of assets of the European Social Fund (ESF) to developing sustainable equity and employment between 2014 and 2020. Social inclusion and educational/vocational training were the next highest categories for investment. Social funds are an insurance system providing protection against life risks such as unemployment, old age, and illness. The ESF brings together four funds that drive social initiatives in Europe including aid to the most deprived, youth initiatives, and social and employment programs. Funding is then allocated to each member state to invest in the local people.
