Surfing became an Olympic event for the first time at the 2020 Olympic Games, taking place in 2021 as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Brazil and the United States both won gold in the men's and women's events respectively, while Japan was the only country to win two medals: a silver and a bronze.
