In 2023, overnight travel expenditure accounted for 3.9 percent of Japan's national GDP. Expenses for overnight travels, which included spending by Japanese nationals and international travelers alike, amounted to roughly 23.1 trillion Japanese yen, which was a new decade-high.

*Figures are estimates. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the survey to calculate travel expenditure of inbound travelers was suspended from Q2 to Q4 in 2020 and Q1 to Q3 in 2021. Figures for the respective years were approximated by utilizing per capita travel expenditure and applying it to the rest of the period in which the survey results were missing.
