As of April 1, 2024, nearly 18 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions were covered by an emissions trading system (ETS). Between 2005 and 2020, the share of emissions covered by an ETS increased from roughly five percent to just over seven percent. Coverage sharply increased in 2021 due to China's national ETS coming into force.
