Verified aviation emissions covered by the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) totaled 47.8 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) in 2023. From 2013 to 2019, EU ETS aviation emissions increased by 27 percent to 68 MtCO₂e. However, the following year saw emissions from the aviation industry plummet 63 percent due to COVID-19 -related travel restrictions. Though emissions have rebounded since then, they have remained below pre-pandemic levels.
