In September 2022, the population of Sweden elected a new parliament, four years after the previous election. In the election, the Social Democratic Party became the largest party in terms of share of votes, but the center-right block formed a government afterwards. A year on, the Social Democrats had increased their support even further.
High voter turnout
In the parliamentary election in 2022, as many as 84 percent of the eligible voters in Sweden casted their vote. This was one of the highest turnouts throughout the world in recent years.
High share of women - but not above 50 percent
Sweden is often seen as a country with a high level of gender equality, and this is the case for share of women in the Parliament. In 2022, 46 percent of the parliamentarians were female. However, the country has yet to beat the 50 percent mark. The same year, 45 percent of the candidates for the election were women.
