The energy sector is the main consumer of coal in China. The sector encompassing the production and supply of electricity and heat used more than two billion metric tons of coal in 2019. Manufacturing industries were responsible for a combined 1.6 billion metric tons of coal consumed, with petroleum, coal and other fuel processing being the largest consumer within this economic sector. Coal is the main energy source consumed in China, accounting for around 57 percent of the country's total energy consumption.
