After the cut-off of Russian deliveries to Europe following its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian imports dropped from 14 billion cubic meters of natural gas imported per semester in 2021 to 0.66 billion cubic meters in the second half of 2023. Algeria became the main importer, with roughly 12 billion cubic meters of gas imported to Italy per semester. A significant increase was observed in the imports from Azerbaijan. LNG imports are expected to rise in the next years. Currently, most of the LNG imported to Italy originates in Qatar, Algeria, and the United States. It then undergoes regasification processes in the Italian offshore plants. Natural gas is the major source of electricity generation in Italy.
