In 2022, almost 97 percent of the expenses of South Korea's universal healthcare service, the National Health Insurance, stemmed from insurance payouts paid to insurance holders. A further 1.1 percent were costs related to the management and operation of the insurances. That year, this governmental public health insurance program recorded combined expenses of around 86.2 trillion South Korean won, an increase of over seven trillion won compared to the previous year.
