In 2023, the police in Japan cleared over two thousand cases of forcible sexual intercourse and close to five thousand cases of forcible indecencies. That year, the number of recognized rape cases amounted to over 2.7 thousand.
In 2017, amendments to the Penal Code expanded the definition of rape, which up to that point was interpreted as forced vaginal intercourse, to also include forced anal and oral sex.

Provisions of the Penal Code was partially revised (enforced on July 13, 2017); "Rape" was redefined as "Forcible Sexual Intercourse", in accordance with the revision of the constitutive elements of rape.
