In 2022, the stock of asses in South Africa reached almost 146,000 heads. During the last three decades, the donkey population in the country has generally been decreasing. Throughout the 1990s, the stock of asses in the country amounted to 210,000 heads, which dropped to 150,000 heads in 2000. This drop was attributed to an increase in the export of donkey hides to China to be used in traditional Chinese medicine.
