It comes as no surprise that Barcelona, the second-largest city in Spain, is also amongst the most polluted in the country. In 2022, Barcelona's air quality station in L'Eixample registered a record nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) concentration of 42.2 micrograms per cubic meter of air (µg/m³). Meanwhile, out of the 33 air quality stations in Spain's capital Madrid, six had recorded nitrogen dioxide emissions ranking in the country's top 15.
