As of December 2023, some 22,400 hectares had been lost to wildfires that year. Just one year earlier, the country experienced its most devastating fire season in decades, with over 65,000 hectares burned due to wildfires. In the past decade, the largest land loss due to wildland and forest fires was recorded in 2019, when close to 44,000 hectares were burned.
