In the fiscal year 2022, newly built zero energy houses (ZEH) accounted for 68.2 percent of new custom-built detached houses that were built by home builders in Japan. Figures increased steadily in recent years. The share of ZEH constructed by general building contractors was much lower in comparison. Building contractors often are small, local companies, and customers have a high degree of freedom to design the house themselves. In contrast, house builders are bigger companies that usually have sales offices nationwide. Here, customers have less freedom in designing the home themselves as they choose from standard equipment and floor plans.
