In the fiscal year 2020, more than 17 thousand zero energy houses (ZEH) were newly built by general building contractors in Japan. The number of new custom-built ZEH houses that was constructed by home builders was much higher in that year.
Building contractors often are small, local companies, and customers have a high degree of freedom to design the house themselves. In contrast, house builders are bigger companies that usually have sales offices nationwide. Here, customers have less freedom in designing the home themselves as they choose from standard equipment and floor plans.
