On January 1st, 2022, the Netherlands had the steepest unleaded petrol excise duties, at 824 euros per 1,000 liters. Italy came second in the ranking, with unleaded petrol excise duties of some 728 euros. Italy was also the European Union member with the highest diesel excise duties, at 617 euros per 1,000 liters.
