Investors may face a trade-off when choosing between economic, social, and governance (ESG) benefits and the return on investment. Almost half of investors surveyed in 2021 noted they would not accept a lower rate of return in exchange for ESG benefits. One in three investors stated they would accept a drop of or below 100 basis points (one percent) in their rate of return. Meanwhile, three percent of investors were willing to receive a reduction of 500 bps (five percent) on their return on investment in return for ESG-related benefits.
