The leading incentive to motivate sustainable consumption in Japan was to make environmentally-friendly products more affordable as revealed in a survey conducted by Rakuten Insight in February 2022. While 30 percent of respondents considered affordability a hurdle to sustainable consumption, only eight percent saw a solution in an increase of taxes or fees on single-use plastic packaging.
