Default rate index of first mortgages in the U.S. 2012-2022
The S&P/Experian first mortgage default index stood at 0.36 as of May 2022, meaning that based on data from
the most recent three months, the annualized share of default first mortgages was 0.36 percent. This was lower than the default rate index of second mortgages and home equity loans. Although the index rose in 2022, it remained below the levels observed in the first two months of 2020 when it amounted to approximately 0.8 percent.
