Sustainability-linked bonds (SLBs) issuance has increased in recent years, particularly in emerging market economies. The value of SLB issuance almost tripled, from 45 billion U.S. dollars in 2019 to 130 billion U.S. dollars in 2021, an increase of approximately 183 percent. SLBs are utilized by corporations to fund the execution of sustainability goals, but with no restrictions were in place on how funds were to be used. The issuance of bonds is generally linked to predefined sustainability or Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) objectives. Some of the most popular SDG sectors among investors were health, climate change mitigation, and food and agriculture.
