According to the data, the average cost of the daily defined dose (DDD) of contraceptives in Italy was 0.54 euros in 2023. The cost of emergency oral contraceptives was the only type of contraceptive for which the cost was far above the average, at 26 euros. However, this type of contraceptive is used on a one-time basis.

Consumption of contraceptives

In recent years, the consumption of contraceptives has increased in Italy, with the regions in the north having the highest consumption. The most used contraceptives are the fourth-generation estrogen-progestin oral contraceptives, with 66.8 DDD per 1,000 inhabitants, followed by the third-generation and intrauterine contraceptives.

STIs

In 2021, most of the people contracting a sexual transmitted infection (STI) in Italy were using condoms only occasionally, while the consistent and correct use of condoms significantly reduces the probability of getting STI. During the same year, most cases of diagnosed STIs in Italy were caused by viral and bacterial infections with almost 2.8 thousand and 2.9 thousand cases, respectively.
