Severe drought in the Western United States has caused water levels on the Colorado River to drop. The Colorado River system as a whole was at 33 percent of its peak capacity as of January 29, 2023. The previous year saw the Colorado river system content at 37 percent. The two largest reservoirs in the United States - Lake Mead and Lake Powell - were well below their full capacities in early 2023.
