In a survey conducted between December 2021 and January 2022, around 17.1 percent of married men aged 20 to 39 in Japan reported that they had three romantic partners, including their spouse, before marrying. A similar share of men in the same age group, about 16.8 percent, reported having had six or more relationships in the past.

The sample was selected based on the distribution of marital status, gender, and age in Eastern and Western Japan in the 2020 population census.

Original question: "Please indicate how many of the following people you had in your life - number of people (including spouse) you were romantically involved with from junior high school graduation until first marriage. If you are currently not married, please indicate the number of people until now."
