Electricity production breakdown in Europe 2021, by source

In 2021, the main sources of electricity in Europe were nuclear power, at 25 percent, and natural gas, at 20 percent. Nuclear was the main electricity source in France, Switzerland, Belgium, Finland, Ukraine, Slovakia, Hungary, and Slovenia; while electricity came predominantly from gas in Italy, the United Kingdom, and Greece, for instance. Coal, the fossil fuel with the largest carbon footprint, was still the third-largest electricity source in Europe and the main one in Germany, Poland, Czechia, and Turkey, among others. Countries with the largest share of electricity coming from renewables included Norway, Sweden, Spain, Romania, Austria, and Albania.
