As of June 2022, more than six out of ten likely voters in the U.S. believed the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) should be allowed to regulate air pollution that contributes to climate change. This view was strongest among democrat voters, with 82 percent of survey respondents defending the EPA's pollution regulation authority. In contrast, only 41 percent of Republicans stated the same.
On June 30, 2022 - two weeks after the survey was conducted - the Supreme Court ruled on the West Virginia vs. EPA case, deciding that the EPA had overstepped its authority in regulating carbon emissions from power plants. As of 2021, two of the most polluting U.S. power plants were in West Virginia.
