In 2020, copper had the highest global production value of any energy transition metal. The production value of copper amounted to 123 billion U.S. dollars that year. Aluminum had the second-highest production value that year, at 107 billion U.S. dollars. Demand for the metals that are necessary for the energy transition, such as copper and nickel, is expected to increase drastically in the coming years due to their extensive use in building the structures that produce low-carbon energy.
