Since 2017, the vaccination of infants against meningococcal C includes a first dose at the age of 5 months followed by a recall at 12 months. The dose at the age of 5 months, which became mandatory in 2018, is intended to be temporary, the time to reach a sufficient herd immunity in the population to protect infants without the need for vaccination. The vast majority of children born in France in 2020 were thus immunized against the Meningococcus bacterium responsible for cases of meningitis.
From 2018 to 2020, the meningococcal C vaccination coverage (with at least one dose at 8 months) increased from 75.8 to 88 percent among infants. Furthermore, roughly 90 percent of the cohort of children born in 2019 received a booster dose (at 21 months).

Supplementary notes
Meningococcus is a bacterium found in the throat and nose. Most often, it does not cause disease. Sometimes it is responsible for serious infections, such as meningitis, in children and young adults. These infections exist worldwide. There are several types of meningococci. In France, types B and C are the most common, vaccination against it is mandatory for infants since January 1, 2018.
The data analysis excluded the French departments for which the DCIR* does not allow reliable estimates of vaccination coverage, due to the significant proportion of children vaccinated in PMI where vaccines are provided free of charge by the Departmental Council.
*DCIR stands for the inter-regime consumption datamart which contains all the city care reimbursed for beneficiaries of the Health Insurance. It makes it possible to carry out studies on the consumption of care by beneficiaries and the practices of health professionals.
