Approximately one in four investors surveyed in 2021 had a preference for a fixed fee structure when paying for custody services. This preference was reflected by the firms providing custody services, as 44 percent of firms surveyed noted that they expected to use a fixed fee structure in the coming two years. Custodians are financial institutions that hold assets on behalf of clients either in electronic or physical form to reduce risks such as theft. Intermediaries such as financial advisors are required to organize custodian services for end investor clients.

The survey group comprised of 500 investment providers in the top investment markets around the world. The survey covered 15 countries from three different regions: The survey group covered a range of sectors, from investment advisory firms and retail asset managers to private banks and family offices. Half of the respondents were C-level executives, while the rest were at the managing director or senior vice president levels. 2,325 investors were also surveyed. The group varied by wealth level, age, gender, and location.
