In 2015, most fixed-term commutation ticket users in Japan's Greater Tokyo Area used it for their daily commute, accounting for 40.5 percent of the traffic generated by this group. In contrast, regular ticket users had 29.5 percent of their traffic due to personal affairs.

In the survey, the Greater Tokyo Area comprised the following prefectures: Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, Chiba, Ibaraki, Gunma, Tochigi, and Yamanashi. Moreover, the survey limited the area to municipalities meeting the following criteria:
Railway commute time within 120-minutes to Tokyo Station.
At least a three-percent share of commuters, but at least 500 people, working or attending school in the 23 special wards of Tokyo.
The start or end of the survey subjects' railway travel had to be within the survey area.
