The number of gig workers in India showed a steady increase, with 6.8 million workers employed in the sector during the financial year 2020 as compared to 2.52 million in the financial year 2012.
Gig workers are usually engaged in temporary, short-term or hourly work contracts. The Indian economic survey 2020-21 noted that the country has emerged as one of the world's largest countries for flexi-staffing, and the sector is expected to grow even more in the coming years.
