CET1: leading EU banking sectors by country 2023

After a period of decreasing CET1 ratio in the first half of 2022 caused by weak economic conditions due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and EU sanctions against Russia, the CET1 ratio increased in all observed countries in the last quarter of 2022. Out of the leading EU member states, the Netherlands' banking industry had the highest common equity tier 1 (CET1) ratio between 2016 and 2023. As of the fourth quarter of 2023, it stood at around 16.55 percent, a slight decrease compared to the previous quarters.
