Based on a survey conducted in the third quarter of 2023, almost 66 percent of the South African internet users were on social media to stay in touch with friends and family. Almost half of the respondents cited reading news stories on social media, which was the second most popular reason cited. Moreover, finding inspiration for things to do and buy ranked as the third main purpose for South Africans on social media. In contrast, the least reported reasons were making new contacts or supporting or connecting with good causes.
