As the demand for passenger electric vehicles (EV) increases, the demand for the battery metals required to produce them does as well. In the second half of 2020 (H2 2020), some 57,000 metric tons of lithium carbonate equivalent was deployed in all newly sold passenger electric vehicles (EV) worldwide. By H2 2021, this amount increased to 107,200 metric tons, representing a year-on-year demand increase of 88 percent.

In addition to the metals demand displayed in the graph, 23,600 metric tons of manganese and 159,200 metric tons of graphite were deployed onto roads globally in the batteries of all newly sold passenger EVs combined in H2 2021.
