According to a survey conducted by the Global Times Research Center and the Beijing Foreign Studies University in June 2021, around 41.3 percent of respondents in China said they considered Australia as being more of a threat to China than an economic partner. Around 46 percent of respondents blamed 'factors involving the United States' for the bad relationship between China and Australia.

Out of the 2,067 respondents, 76.3 percent were middle to high income earners and 68.17 percent had a bachelor’s degree or above. They were also concentrated in ten large Chinese cities – Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Kunming, Qingdao, Shanghai, Shenyang, Wuhan, Xi’an, and Zhengzhou.
