In 2020, metallurgy was the sector with the highest allowance surplus on the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), at 26 percent of the sector's verified emissions. Aviation, other process emissions, paper process emissions and all stationary installations presented an allowance surplus, while all other sectors recorded an allowance deficit. The EU Emissions Trading System is a carbon credit market used to mitigate climate change, and one of the tools to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
