The European Union (EU-27) generated approximately 229 million metric tons of municipal waste in 2022, of which 53 million metric tons were landfilled. Nevertheless, the amount of municipal waste landfilled in the EU fell by some 53 percent since 2000, with its share of generated waste dropping to 23 percent. During this same period, the amount of municipal waste recycled in European Union increased from 38 million to 68 million metric tons, and now accounts for the largest share of waste treatment. When composting is included with recycling, the overall recycling rate of municipal waste in the EU stood at nearly 50 percent in 2022.
