According to a global survey conducted in June 2022, three of ten online shoppers reported being influenced by companies' actions to protect the environment. The country with the most eco-conscious respondents among the markets surveyed was Vietnam. Almost half of digital buyers there valued companies that reduce carbon emissions, utilize recyclable materials, and reduce plastic pollution.
Embracing sustainability
All over the world, consumers are demanding more sustainable initiatives from e-commerce companies. Across the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States, climate-savvy shoppers want environmentally friendly packaging, affordable eco-friendly products, as well as transparent sustainability policies. In German-speaking countries, consumers are willing to adopt sustainable shopping habits, such as tolerating longer delivery times, returning reusable packaging, and allowing minor product defects to reduce waste. Globally, online shoppers from the Asia-Pacific region buy the most nature-friendly products.
Corporate carbon footprint
Pollution and the overconsumption of natural resources are major problems for online retailers. In an effort to turn greener, e-tailers worldwide intend to offer more recyclable products (46 percent) and improve manufacturing efficiencies (39 percent). Yet, only 23 percent of e-commerce brands plan to offset their emissions. As other global players, Amazon is a big polluter. The carbon footprint of the globally dominating marketplace has grown from roughly 40 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2018 to over 70 million in 2021.
