A total of 46.54 Indian north-eastern households received employment under Mahatma Gandhi NREGA scheme in the fiscal year 2022. Assam registered around two million employed households, the highest among north-eastern states of India.
The government of India introduced the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in 2005 to ensure hundred days of unskilled manual labor on public projects.
