ROE of selected leading European banks 2003-2022

The state of the global economy is reflected in the return on equity (ROE) of some of the leading European banks. During the global financial crisis in 2007, for instance, all observed banks saw their ROE plummeting. After the crisis in 2007, the observed banks managed to maintain a relatively stable ROE - although with fluctuations - until COVID-19. The global pandemic resulted in another drop in the ROE, which was particularly sharp at Banco Santander. In 2021, all observed banks performed better, which was reflected in the sharp increase in their ROE.

This statitsic was compiled by Statista using figures published by each observed bank. The selection of banks was based on the value of total assets. The reporting of Crédit Agricole and Group BPCE differ from that of the rest of the banks, hence they are not included in this statistic.
