As of March 2023, the main reason for sickness absences among NHS staff in England was anxiety, depression, and other psychiatric illnesses. During that time, nearly one in four sickness absences related to such a reason. In addition, the second most common reason for sickness absences in the NHS workforce was colds and flus.
