More than 7.6 million households in Ghana used improved sources of drinking water as of 2021. Of these, the majority, 98 percent, were in urban areas. On the other hand, around 671,000 households resorted to unimproved water sources, most of which were in rural communities.

The source defines improved water as a "water source that is likely to be protected from outside contamination such as pipe borne water, borehole, tube well, protected well, rain water, protected spring, bottled water and sachet water".
