Coal-to-clean carbon price by country 2010-2022

In 2022, Indonesia recorded the highest carbon price to switch from coal to clean energy, at 102 U.S. dollars per metric ton of carbon dioxide. Nonetheless, this is a considerable decrease from the 671 U.S. dollars per metric ton of carbon dioxide seen in 2010. By comparison, Japan had the highest carbon price to transition coal-to-clean in 2010, at 741 U.S. dollars per metric ton of carbon dioxide, and figures fell to 59 U.S. dollars per metric ton of carbon dioxide in 2022. An ongoing energy supply shortage, particularly of fossil fuels, and greater investments in renewable resources is part of the reason for why carbon prices have fallen so drastically in 2022.
