Renewables accounted for approximately 16 percent of final energy consumption in China in 2023. Hydropower was the largest renewable contributor to China's energy consumption, at almost seven percent. Although wind and solar sources have become more prevalent in China's power mix, the continued importance of fossil fuels for the transportation and heating sector means that total energy consumption remains largely shaped by carbon-intensive sources.
