In 2022, the Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer TSMC claimed to have saved 216 million metric tons of water. The issue of water usage is a crucial issue in the chip manufacturing process because water plays an integral role which leads to a high water consumption. As a consequence, Taiwanese chip manufacturers compete with local farmers for water resources after the island experienced the worst drought in 56 years in 2021.
