The FMCG category includes products such as food, beverages, toiletries, and alcohol. It is therefore not surprising that FMCG products represent a large part of state economies. For example, the food market alone is expected to reach 23.93 billion U.S. dollars in revenue in 2023, and the revenue of the non-alcoholic beverages market to 2.92 billion U.S. dollars.
Household spending
The revenues of individual FMCG markets consist of household expenditures and others. Households spend the most on food of all products falling under the FMCG category. Over the period observed from 2008 to 2022, household spending on food in Czechia has risen and reached nearly 452 billion koruna in 2022. Among other personal expenses, Czech households spent a significant amount on alcoholic beverages, which amounted to almost 109 billion koruna in 2022. Other crucial spending areas included the clothing market and the personal care products market.
Growing prices
Given the rising prices of many FMCG products, we can only expect increased household spending. The food market prices, including non-alcoholic beverages, increased by 33.5 percent in 2022. Addictive substances such as alcoholic beverages and tobacco saw an even more radical price increase, reaching 38.6 percent. Clothing and footwear sector was also hit by the rising inflation, causing price increases amounting to nearly 31 percent. This high inflation starting in 2022 was caused by the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and the related economic crisis.
