Based on a survey carried out in September 2021, investors were looking for several characteristics in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) reporting. The three most important characteristics were how well the ESG reporting explained the relevance of ESG factors to the company's business model, how well it provided detailed information about the progress towards ESG targets, and how well it explained the rationale for environmental commitments made and detailed plans for how to reach them.

The data is based on an online survey conducted by PwC. PwC received responses from 325 investment professionals across 43 territories. In addition, PwC also conducted 40 in-depth interviews with investors and analysts in 11 territories who represent a combined assets under management of more than 14 trillion U.S. dollars.
