In 2023, Europe's largest surface mine based on the Run of Mine (ROM) production was the Belchatow Mine, which is a coal mining project located in Lodz, Poland. The mine had an estimated production of 61.48 million metric tons ROM that year. This was followed by the Aitik Mine, a copper mine in Norbotten, Sweden with a production volume of approximately 42.693 million metric tons ROM.
